Ute Müller (°1978, AT) lives and works in Vienna.

Ute Müller is figuring out figuration. Having studied painting, she expanded her practice to include sculpture, installation, and spatial interventions. Describing her work as conceptual yet material, her practice examines the space between motif and representation and how ideas and forms shift when translated across media.

Approaching her work as situational, Müller focuses on how objects and materials evolve rather than aiming for a conclusive final piece. Concentrating on transformations through the process, she avoids established rules of composition. A central concern is how to see—or rather how to unlearn—emphasizing bodily engagement to expand our understanding of visibility.

Through the artist fanzine Black Pages and multiple reinterpretations of Adolf Loos’s American Bar, Müller has extended her painting-oriented approach into a broader dialogue with social structures.

The residency of Ute Müller is supported by the Land Steiermark.
