Bouncing Days: a bouncing castle in WIELS
Jump into art!
As part of RendezVous (Brussels Art Week), WIELS hosts The Farewell Hotel in the WIELS garden. This monumental inflatable castle, created by former WIELS resident Sharon Van Overmeiren, invites children and adults alike to enter, explore, and bounce through its hidden inner world. Perfectly bouncy, the installation transforms into a playful experience, transcending the divide between what is real and imaginary, questioning limits and boundaries, and how to open them up.

Drawing on references from pre-Columbian motifs to cartoons, and from museological scenography to Pokémon, The Farewell Hotel hides a vivid green interior within its rough, dark exterior. Visitors of all ages are invited to bounce, explore, and rethink what a work of art can be. Monumental in its verticality, the installation exemplifies Van Overmeiren’s signature approach: an organic architectural composition that functions as a cohesive whole while revealing multiple subdivisions and layers of experience.

Sharon Van Overmeiren tunes into the infinite flow of visual information in our collective consciousness. She copies and pastes forms that cross her path, introducing shapes to each other to spark formal conversations. Translating found forms is central to her practice: a process through which she strips shapes from their original context, discovers their essence, and equalises them.
