About this event

To mark the recent launch of Juan Cruz’ collection of art writings entitled Catalogue: It will seem a dream, Occasional Papers has invited curators, artists and writers to read passages from the book in public.

Among the participants lending their voices to the event are Juan Cruz, Sara De Bondt, Luc Derycke, Zoë Gray, Frances Horn, Katrin Kamrau, Jurgen Maelfeyt, Natasha Soobramanien.

Cruz’s artistic practice is intimately concerned with language, and with translation in particular. The texts collected in Catalogue cover his entire career to date, and have been retrieved from visual works produced in an array of now obsolete formats: cassettes, mini discs, miniDVs, Hi8s, Quark, Claris Works. These writings perform translation on multiple levels, from art history and textual genres to technologies and contexts of presentation.

Juan Cruz (b. 1970, Palencia, Spain) is an artist as well as the Dean of Fine Art at the Royal College of Art, London. A major retrospective of his work took place in Musac, Leon, earlier this year. His work has also been shown at Matt’s Gallery, London; Witte de With, Rotterdam; Serralves Foundation, Porto; Museum of Living Art, Reykjavik; Galeria Elba Benitez, Madrid and the Melbourne Festival, Australia – among many other venues.
